Who We Are
Aldis, Inc. is a CleanTech company formed in 2006 focusing on the transportation logistics and advanced infrastructure management markets. Aldis develops, commercializes and sells patent-pending, efficient traffic and energy management technology and services to municipal partners. Aldis participates in the $104 billion highway transportation market with an initial focus on the traffic signal and management segment.
Aldis is developing a patent-pending signal technology for traffic management — the Guardian Eye™ — designed to save lives, improve energy efficiency and alleviate problems experienced daily at poorly functioning intersections. The Guardian Eye™ obsoletes conventional, inductive loop technology using vision, advanced integrated circuits and heuristic algorithms creating automated, real-time, distributed traffic management.
The Guardian Eye™ will be introduced as Phase II of Aldis’ deployment program in early 2008. Phase I, the Aldis Advantage Program™, focuses on upgrading current incandescent signals to Aldis’ proprietary Aldis Eye™ signals (incorporating advanced engineering, enhanced LEDs and sensors for monitoring traffic) to improve energy efficiency while reducing total cost of ownership.
The Aldis Advantage Program™ is available currently and is being implemented in several beta sites and is served through the Aldis logistics program administered through the international logics group 3rd Party Service Provider/Service Center using local service providers. Many of Aldis’ service partners are the same providers currently working with local communities.
Our Technology
The Guardian Eye™ is protected by six pending patents and is based on improving traffic throughput by optimizing decisions locally - at each signal - with only the information available at that signal.
By using advanced image processing algorithms and a 360 degree image, the Guardian Eye™ can extract information on each vehicle passing through the intersection (it can also distinguish between cars, trucks and busses) as well as pedestrians, bicycles and animals - and then use this information to make intelligent decisions on how to optimize traffic flow. All optimizations are done in real time and are constantly adapting to new traffic conditions - day and night. In addition, Aldis can program the system to allow priority for public safety and emergency vehicles.
A Clean-Tech Company
When fully deployed, Aldis’ LED signals will save approximately 180 million pounds of carbon emissions annually. The Texas Transportation Institute has estimated that in 2003, traffic congestion nationwide cost the economy over $65 billion per year; a figure that has more than doubled since 1993.
The Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Lab also conducted a study recently which attributed an annual delay of 296 million vehicle hours to poor signal timing alone. Aldis projects the Guardian Eye™ will increase throughput efficiency at each intersection by up to 40%, thereby saving considerable energy and time while also reducing vehicle deterioration.
The real time adaptive functionality of the Guardian Eye™guarantees that you will never have to retime your traffic signals again. The Guardian Eye™ perpetually optimizes timing day or night without human intervention.
The National Traffic Signal Report Card released by the National Transportation Operations Coalition in 2005 (National Traffic Signal Report Card) estimates that if all the signals in the United States were properly timed, national travel time would be reduced by 25%, fuel consumption would fall by 10% or 17 billion gallons a year. This time and energy savings adds up to a reduction in harmful emission (carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds) by 22%.
Safety Always
Facts:
- In 2003 there 1.9 million intersection accidents. Red light running (RLR) was responsible for 219,000 of these accidents[1], with many more caused by “aggressive” by legal driving.
- The 1.9 million crashes resulted in over 1,000 deaths and 181,000 injuries.[2]
- The monetary impact of intersections crashes caused by RLR is estimated at $14 billion annually.[3]
- One in three Americans know someone who has been killed or injured by a RLR.[4]
The Guardian Eye™ is a ceaseless protector. With vision, it looks and measures traffic in all directions, adjusting signals to extend red lights when a probable RLR is detected, allowing you to stay put instead of driving into harms way. We’ve Got Vision.
Numerous studies over time, including one reported by the U.S. Department of transportation from a program in Winston-Salem, North Carolina showed that increasing the signal head size from 8” to 12” resulted in a 47% decrease in right angle collisions. All Aldis LED heads are 12” and the Company has a firm commitment to deliver the safest possible solutions for your community.
